ESSENTIAL PURPOSE: To manage the staff and operations of the Golf Course, Soccer Fields, and Turfgrass Maintenance Department to ensure first class quality functional and aesthetic standards while maintaining the highest possible levels of employee morale.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
To hire, train, schedule, support, review, discipline, and terminate employees directly accountable to his/her position, to maintain highest possible levels of employee morale and productivity.
To schedule staff and operations most effectively to coincide with optimal weather conditions.
To understand and respond to maintenance processes; to oversee the purchase of all materials, supplies, and equipment needed to maintain and upgrade the quality of the golf course.
To establish and enforce golf course goals and policies.
To ensure that all golf facilities meet golf course standards and member satisfaction.
To have professional and consistent communication with all related departments, including weekly meetings with any department impacted by golf and maintenance procedures.
To prepare annual departmental budget according to the specifications set forth by the General Manager, and manage the course’s operations within the budgets.
To ensure that the golf course, grounds, equipment, and all other facets of the facility are properly maintained and protected.
To conduct periodic staff meetings to ensure all policies are understood and being followed.
To continually monitor and control departmental expenditures to ensure meeting operational stands while maintaining the budget and monitoring staffing levels, salaries, and overtime so they stay within the prescribed guidelines.
To oversee and reconcile monthly invoices.
To conduct periodic drive-throughs of the property.
To put out to bid, annually, all major vendor supplies needed for departmental operations.
To make appropriate turf and landscape decisions designed to uphold the highest level of golf and soccer field playability and aesthetic standards as set forth by San Juan Hills Golf Club while maintaining a healthy environment for our employees, and surrounding community.
To understand and respond to all requests in a timely and professional manner.
To properly document personnel/payroll transactions, as directed, for processing.
To promote and comply with all policies and procedures of San Juan Hills Golf Club.
To ensure department safety training for all new maintenance employees, before they begin work.
To conduct departmental operations meetings, including monthly safety meetings.
To practice safe work habits at all times in order to avoid injury to self and others.
To continually monitor and control departmental expenditures to ensure meeting operational standards while maintaining annual budget.
To purchase supplies and services, and schedule all maintenance procedures, as directed.
To immediately report all suspicious occurrences and hazardous conditions.
To maintain the cleanliness and safety of work areas at all times.
To ensure safe work practices of all Golf Maintenance staff, including compliance with company and departmental safety rules and regulations and the proper use and handling of all relevant equipment.
To ensure proper use, storage, and labeling of all hazardous substances used by Golf Maintenance employees, in accordance and compliance with state and federal regulations.
To attend all mandatory meetings, as directed.
To perform other tasks, including cross-training, as directed.
Initiation and oversight of outside contractors for both maintenance and construction of San Juan Hills facilities as needed.
Work in conjunction with outside consultants for property success.
EDUCATION LEVEL: AA degree in horticulture, turf management, or equivalent experience, required. Must have a minimum of four years experience in golf course maintenance including at least one year in a supervisory position. English fluency required. Spanish fluency helpful. Must have knowledge of all aspects of turf grass management and related equipment, to include latest technology and new products. Experienced in new greens construction, development of annual budget, employee supervision, and inventory control. Familiar with OSHA, and local Department of Health regulations, and current relevant laws governing handling of hazardous substances.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES: Valid California driver’s license and minimum of a California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate. QAL preferred.

Good team player. Detail oriented. Highly self-motivated. Ability to effectively manage staff to maintain a high level of morale and productivity. Ability to work well under pressure.
