About the Club
Founded in 1881 as the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, Long Island, fox hunting and polo were the early activities at the Club. In 1894, golf was added as an amenity with a nine-hole course that was built in Hempstead, New York. In 1895, Meadow Brook Club (the “Club”) became the 37th member of the USGA and hosted the first United States Women’s Amateur golf tournament. In 1897, the Club became a charter member of the Metropolitan Golf Association. The golf course was expanded to 18 holes by architect Devereaux Emmet in 1916. In the first half of the twentieth century, the Club hosted many significant events and matches. In the early 1950s, the original golf course and polo grounds were requisitioned for the extension of the Meadowbrook Parkway. In 1953 as part of the eminent domain proceeding, the Club was awarded a new location for the golf course in Jericho, New York and commissioned golf course architect Dick Wilson to design and construct the new course. In June of 1955, the golf course opened in its current location and was labeled a “born classic” by famed golf writer Herbert Warren Wind in an article in the October 1955 edition of Sports Illustrated.
In the 70 years since its relocation, the Club has hosted many prominent local and national tournaments, including the LPGA Western Union International Classic from 1979-1982, numerous Metropolitan PGA Championships, Met Open Championships, and the Northville Classic, a nationally televised Senior PGA Tour event from 1987-2003. In 2016, golf restoration architect Brian Silva oversaw a major restoration and enhancement project to the golf course and practice facilities. Subsequent to the course restoration, the Club has also completed substantial incremental course upgrades, clubhouse renovations, and the construction of a state-of-the-art indoor practice facility. The Club is currently slated to host the prestigious Met Open in August 2025 and expects to host additional top-level professional and amateur events in the future.
The Club has a reputation as one of the finest clubs and golf courses in the Metropolitan New York area, and its golf-centric membership enjoys a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, the highest service standards, exceptional playing conditions, outstanding Club governance, and a club that is rich in history and tradition. Meadow Brook has always attracted top professionals who are acknowledged as among the best club professionals in the country. Current head professional Matt Dobyns is a two-time National Club Pro Champion (2012 and 2016).
The membership enjoys exceptional course conditions, thoughtful governance, and a welcoming, tradition-rich environment. The Club operates year-round with breakfast and lunch service from February through December and one dinner per month. The golf course and practice facilities are open year-round, weather permitting, although the Superintendent does not need to maintain playability throughout the winter. The Club has no non-golf operations.
