The Assistant Superintendent position at Virginia Country Club plays a central role in raising the bar of course conditioning at VCC each day. By leading effective training, conducting daily quality control measures and coaching team members to achieve standards, a successful Assistant Superintendent helps deliver a consistent golf experience for our Membership and their guests.
Our team culture at VCC is centered around the principle of sustainable excellence. It is our firm belief that if we can’t achieve fantastic conditioning in a sustainable manner, it’s not being done the right way. At VCC, two Assistant Superintendents share responsibilities, allowing the management team more time on the golf course to ensure our daily standards are met by the operation. This daily vigilance and presence on the course allows our team to be responsive and efficient with our crew’s time. In order to stay mentally and physically fresh, Assistant Superintendents typically work a weekly schedule of 4 weekdays and 1 weekend day, limiting their typical work week to approximately 40-44 hrs.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Schedules, trains, supervises, and motivates a team of 30 with the assistance of the Director of Agronomy
Conducts daily quality control inspections of the work completed by team members to uphold standards of conditioning and identify where more training or focus may be required
Collaborates with fellow Assistant Superintendent to achieve responsibilities of the position and reports directly to Director of Agronomy
Supervises and/or executes all planting, fertilizing, care and removal of turf, plants, shrubs, trees, and other facilities on the golf course
Oversees the application of fertilizers and nutrients for the property
Oversees moisture management of all playing surfaces with Irrigation Technicians
Oversees repairs of broken water lines or valves and may perform necessary repairs in an emergency
Establishes short and long-range plans for the golf course with the Director of Agronomy
Implements the property’s safety programs
Maintains accurate work records for all personnel in the department
Ensures that chemicals, petroleum, and other controlled products are used, stored and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations; maintains required records
Communicates as necessary with the golf shop relating to on-course activities weather conditions
Works with Director of Agronomy to ensure proper landscaping throughout the property including the clubhouse and surrounding areas
Helps to coordinate applicable work with outside contractors
REQUIREMENTS
Certificate or Degree in Turfgrass Management, Horticulture, or other relevant studies is preferred
Possess a positive attitude through both, successes and adversity, with awareness that leaders set the tone and culture of our teams
Ability to lead and hold team members accountable for their job performance with direct but respectful communication and demeanor
Possess an enthusiasm for continued professional growth, learning, and improvement of the Membership’s golf experience
Demonstrated work ethic and good character in past positions or schooling; past employer / educator references will be highly weighted relative to work experiences
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to direct and motivate team members
Strong problem-solving skills with ability to create timely solutions in a dynamic work environment
Ability to meet and perform the physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is typical of this position
Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping and pulling
Possess California pesticide applicators license or have ability to do so within 60 days of hire
