The assistant golf course superintendent reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent's supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course, supervises the maintenance and repair of the equipment fleet, and does related work as required. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent's capacity during his/her absence.

Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; schedules work; and supervises the employees and the use of equipment.

Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.

Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment.

Participates in the operation and maintenance of the irrigation and drainage systems.

Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety and personnel discipline.

May modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.

Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and pesticides; irrigation systems, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.

Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance staff to achieve efficient utilization of workers and equipment; prepare clear and concise reports; and maintain effective employee and public relations.

Responsible for the scheduling, training, supervising and evaluating of all grounds personnel.

Supervises all planting, fertilizing and care of turf, plants, shrubs, trees and other facilities on the golf course

Supervises employees in the use/training of equipment.

Develop and maintain all drainage, irrigation and watering systems

Maintains course in proper playing condition; this may entail having to routinely play the course.

Implements and enforces comprehensive safety program for employees, members and guests on course in compliance with local, state and federal programs

Maintains accurate work records for all personnel in the department

Communicates as necessary with grounds, golf, house committees and/or other applicable committees

Insures that chemicals, petroleum and other controlled products are used, stored, and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Maintains required records and strives to minimize use of chemical and petroleum products

Attends turf conferences, equipment shows, workshops and other educational programs to maintain a current knowledge of technical and turf innovations and changes that could affect the department’s operations.

Conducts daily facility security checks ensuring accurate inventory of equipment and keys

Develop and implement off-season maintenance and storage plan and preventive care program for all equipment

Work with Head Golf Course Technician to develop SOPs for shop/equipment maintenance and cleanliness.

Serves in the Grounds Superintendent’s capacity during his/her absence

Any tasks deemed necessary by Grounds Superintendent
