About BlackHorse Golf Club BlackHorse Golf Club is one of Houston’s premier 36-hole facilities, known for delivering a country club experience in a semi-private setting. With a strong foundation, engaged membership, and a deeply loyal team — many of whom have been with the club for over a decade — we’re proud of the culture we’ve built and the high standards we uphold every day. Now, we’re entering an exciting phase of transformation. Our South Course is transitioning to a private model, while the North Course will remain a public facility, giving us a unique and dynamic position in the Houston golf market. To support this evolution and elevate the member experience, we’re investing in a $2 million bunker renovation and redesign this summer — a bold step forward in course conditioning and infrastructure. This is an ideal opportunity for a strategic, visionary agronomic leader to make a lasting impact at a club with momentum, resources, and a team-first culture.
Position Summary We are seeking a Director of Agronomy who can lead with clarity, confidence, and strategic insight. This role goes beyond turf maintenance — it’s about leading people, managing complexity, and building systems that support high-level performance across 36 holes.
You’ll be responsible for overseeing all agronomic operations, with a strong focus on team development, capital project execution, member satisfaction, and long-term planning. As we elevate the South Course into a premier private experience and complete a significant course renovation, this leader will play a central role in shaping the club’s future on the ground level. This position reports directly to the General Manager and collaborates closely with ownership and our home office agronomy team. It requires both hands-on credibility and high-level strategic thinking — a rare opportunity for the right candidate to leave a mark on a club poised for long-term success.
Key Responsibilities • Direct all golf course maintenance operations across both 18-hole courses. • Lead, mentor, and develop superintendents and crew — building a culture of accountability, teamwork, and excellence. • Drive agronomic planning, budgeting, and execution aligned with long-term club goals. • Oversee the $2M bunker renovation project and other future capital initiatives. • Manage irrigation systems, water usage tracking, and regulatory compliance. • Ensure accurate, efficient application and recordkeeping of fertilizers and pesticides. • Collaborate with leadership to align agronomic priorities with member expectations. • Implement operational systems that ensure safety, efficiency, and transparency. • Schedule maintenance practices to optimize course conditions while minimizing disruption to play.
Candidate Profile • Proven leader who thrives in dynamic, multi-course or large-scale environments. • Strong administrative and budgeting skills with a strategic mindset. • A coach and mentor who builds teams and drives performance. • Skilled in long-range planning, scheduling, and capital project execution. • Knowledgeable in ultra-dwarf Bermudagrass and warm-season turf management. • Clear, consistent communicator who works well with all stakeholders. • Calm under pressure, solutions-oriented, and highly organized.
Qualifications • Class A GCSAA membership preferred. • 3–5 years of experience in a superintendent or director-level role. • 2- or 4-year degree in turfgrass management or related field. • Successful experience managing ultra-dwarf Bermudagrass greens. • For-profit or private/semi-private golf course experience preferred. • Valid driver’s license. • Texas pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain within 90 days). • Experience with 5S facility management is a plus. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and agronomic recordkeeping tools.
