JOB TITLE: Golf Course Assistant Superintendent CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Community Services/Parks Recreation and Open Space SUPERVISOR: Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent
Position Summary: Under general supervision of the Golf Course/Ice Maintenance Superintendent or Recreation Program Manager, assists in the planning, scheduling, and direction of golf course turf, maintenance, irrigation, and vehicle and equipment maintenance. Participates in the seasonal operations of the ice rink. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Reviews and evaluates golf course conditions and makes recommendations regarding grooming, watering, fertilizer and pesticide applications, repairs, and maintenance requirements.
Assist or perform daily set up of the golf course to include changing cups, tee markers, emptying trash, fill tee divots, repair ball marks on greens and other activities as assigned.
Coordinates with Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent to set up and maintain the golf course.
Evaluates irrigation requirements and sets irrigation system and controllers to ensure proper irrigation of golf course.
Supervises and mentors’ personnel including work allocation and prioritization, training, performance evaluation and management; motivates employees to achieve high performance, creates and fosters a team-oriented and collaborative work environment.
Trains employees in equipment, techniques, methods, and procedures.
Assist in the opening, closing, maintenance and care of equipment, facilities, and environment while maintaining safe and sanitary conditions.
Perform equipment and facility upkeep and repair.
Oversees, coordinates, maintains, and/or processes payroll time sheets and related leave documents, purchasing documents, and/or contracts.
Monitors facilities and activities to assure that emergency situations are avoided; provides basic safety practices for staff and facilities; deals with escalated problem situations; and serves as a leader for the team.
Participates in the development of operating goals and objectives; recommends, implements, and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations.
Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
Interacts with the public to provide information and helps to resolve complaints.
Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
Performs other duties as required.
Additional Duties When Assigned to the Ice Rink:
Assists with organizing, coordinating, and conducting ice rink operations.
Coordinates assigned programs and events sponsored by the County.

Work Environment: The work environment involves exposure to hazards or physical risks and requires following basic safety precautions. Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings, with exposure to natural weather conditions and elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Travel, on-site response to emergency situations, evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required on short notice.

Minimum Qualifications:
Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university or two-year certificate from an accredited turf management program, or equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
One year of experience in turf maintenance and/or irrigation.
Must be 18 years of age.
Must possess or have ability to obtain within first sixty days of employment and must maintain a valid New Mexico Class D driver’s license.
Must possess or have ability to obtain within thirty days of employment and must maintain Community First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications.
Must possess or have ability to obtain within first thirty days of employment and must maintain valid 3A and 3B State of New Mexico Pesticides, Herbicides, and Fungicides Licenses.
Must successfully complete a thorough background investigation.
Must successfully complete pre-employment physical exam prior to commencing work.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture, or related field.
Supervisory experience.
New Mexico JS6 Journeyman Irrigation License or approved equivalent.
Experience with pre-season ice rink preparations and driving an ice-resurfacing machine.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand. The employee regularly uses manual and finger dexterity and visual acuity to complete tasks. The employee routinely uses a full range of mobility in upper and lower body; reaches overhead; works in various positions, including stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling, and squatting for extended periods of time. The employee must be able to lift, pull and push materials and equipment to complete assigned job tasks; and be able to lift 50 pounds with the assistance of equipment or another person.
