GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION The City of Galesburg seeks to fill one (1) position in the Maintenance Worker classification (Pay Range 16) in the Golf Division of the Department of Parks and Recreation. This is a permanent, overtime-eligible, bargaining unit position with a starting hourly pay rate of $22.96 (Step A).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Maintains Bunker Links Golf Course, associated golf course buildings, and athletic fields such as baseball, soccer, volleyball, rollerblading, and tennis courts.
Operates and maintains an automatic sprinkler system at the golf course.
Sprays and diagnoses turf, pest, and aquatic problems at City parks, recreational fields, lakes, and golf course.
Operates a variety of automotive and heavy equipment such as pick-up trucks, dump trucks, bucket trucks, trash compactor truck, back-hoes, front-end loader, and snow blower/auger truck.
Operates and maintains small tools and equipment such as front-end mowers, reel-type mowers, rotary mowers, push mowers, hedge trimmers, sod cutters, broadcast sprayers, chain saws, stump grinders, chippers, jackhammers, weed eaters, concrete saws, and walk behind snow blowers.
Installs and maintains playground equipment.
Plants, trims, and removes trees and other plants.
Mows and maintains City parks and golf course.
Assists with the preparation and clean up of Special Events in the recreation, parks, and downtown areas.
Winterizes and starts up the City’s restrooms, water fountains, etc.
Plows snow and salts City streets and parking lots.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent.
Possession of, or the ability to obtain and maintain a Class B CDL license with Air Brakes endorsement within one year of hire.
The ability to obtain and maintain an Illinois Pesticide Commercial Not-for-Hire Operators spray license within one year.
At least one year’s experience in construction and park maintenance
Working knowledge of tools, construction principles, methods, techniques, and procedures.
Ability to perform as lead supervisor in a temporary capacity when required.
Ability to work weekends as required.
Ability to perform moderate to very heavy physical labor in an outside environment.
Ability to run a snow plow, and maintain a snow plow route.
To be knowledgeable & compliant with the City’s safety procedures and practices.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Must be able to lift 50-100 pounds on a regular basis and be able to perform heavy to very heavy physical labor. Must be able to climb a ladder, lift, walk, bend, stoop, stand, kneel, reach, and sit. As many of the job duties are outside, the applicant must be able to tolerate manual labor performed in varied and extreme weather conditions.
