Salary Range: $55,000-$70,000 depending on experience.
Position Overview
The Assistant Superintendent will report directly to the Superintendent and Director of Golf Course & Grounds. This role involves managing a team of over 20 staff members, overseeing pesticide use, work schedules, irrigation, budgets, equipment, and safety training. The ideal Assistant Superintendent for Olde Eight will confidently assist in managing the maintenance and renovation of the golf course and surrounding grounds at Olde Eight.
As Olde Eight is undergoing a complete golf course redesign, the Assistant Superintendent will play a critical role in ensuring that pesticide application, and irrigation and turf maintenance align with Olde Eight’s high standards while providing leadership and hands-on management of the day-to-day operations. This role involves working closely with the Director of Golf & Grounds, contractors, architects, and the Olde Eight grounds team to ensure that Olde Eight becomes best-in-class on a national level. As a key member of the Olde Eight grounds management team, the Assistant Superintendent will be expected to drive training and professional growth within the Olde Eight, with the goal of advancing to a Superintendent position, either at Olde Eight or elsewhere.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership
Assist in leading and training the Olde Eight grounds crew staff in daily maintenance tasks.
Ensure the team adheres to safety standards and best practices for course maintenance and equipment operation by conducting regular safety training classes.
Schedule and oversee the work assignments of groundskeepers and equipment operators.
Assist with training, supervising and empowering the ground team to be best in class.
Assist the Superintendent and Director of Golf & Grounds with conducting performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and leadership training for team members.
Ownership of one's own work product, which includes providing guidance, assistance, or mentorship to less knowledgeable or experienced coworkers, volunteers, or interns. This may include scheduling of work, instructing in work methods, and reviewing work products to maximize team performance and outcomes.
Oversee and manage support teams dedicated to providing golf-related event assistance.
Pesticide application:
Ability to safely apply pesticides in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Knowledge of integrated pest management (IPM) practices.
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Pesticide Applicator’s License within 6 months of hire.
Irrigation Management:
Assist in managing the operation of the golf course irrigation system, including repairs, upgrades, and adjustments in coordination with the redesign plan.
Oversee water usage to ensure efficient and sustainable practices, particularly during periods of construction or renovation.
Turf Maintenance:
Assist in overseeing the maintenance of all turf areas, including greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and practice areas.
Ensure turf conditions meet the standards of a high-end private club, especially during and after the redesign process.
Monitor, diagnose, and treat turf issues related to pests, diseases, irrigation, and nutrition.
Supervise and participate in the mowing, watering, fertilizing, and aeration of turf areas.
Course Redesign Support:
Work closely with the Director of Golf & Grounds Superintendent, architects, and contractors during the redesign process.
Provide input and expertise on turf care during construction, such as the selection of grass types, soil preparation, and irrigation needs.
Help manage the coordination of construction schedules to minimize disruption to ongoing course maintenance.
Scheduling and Supervision:

Qualifications:
Preferred Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Turf Management, Horticulture, or related field.
Preferred 2-4 years of experience in golf course maintenance, preferably at a private club.
Experience with or knowledge of golf course construction or redesign projects is highly preferred.
Strong understanding of turf management practices, including fertilization, aeration, irrigation, and pest management.
Knowledge of modern irrigation systems and the ability to troubleshoot issues.
Excellent leadership and team management skills.
Ability to work long hours during peak seasons and redesign phases.
Working knowledge of tools, equipment, and practices for maintaining golf courses.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicator’s License within 6 months of hire.
Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
Ability to manage budgets and analyze financial reports using spreadsheets.
