Hilands Golf Club has an immediate opening for an Assistant Superintendent. The assistant will be involved in all aspects of golf course management while working closely with the Superintendent and Mechanic. We are searching for a self starter with a good attitude, that will work to ensure we are presenting the finest possible conditions to our members and guests. Specific emphasis will be on staff training and supervision, monitoring golf course playing conditions, fertilizer/chemical application, project supervision on renovation projects, and operation/repair of Rainbird irrigation system.
Hilands is a private 9 hole, member-owned facility located in the heart of Billings, which is Montana’s largest city. The course was built in 1923 and is a classic parkland style course with tight tree lined fairways and an average of 13,500 rounds per season. The membership and management staff are committed to continual improvement of the club which leads to investment into equipment and course infrastructure. The assistant will work closely with the superintendent on all project planning and budgeting tasks.
Essential Skills/Job Functions
Knowledge of tools, methods and materials used in golf course maintenance work.
Ability to operate all typical golf course equipment and some forms of heavy equipment.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively with the rest of the maintenance team.
Ability to schedule and coordinate daily work assignments for the grounds crew.
Ability to lift at least 50 pounds on a regular basis and work outdoors for long periods of time.
Operates a 60’ aerial lift truck to complete arborist tasks associated with trees on property.
Work in potentially harsh weather conditions for extended periods of time, including snow removal in winter.
Oversees the daily assignments of crew and assists with field decisions regarding job procedures, work standards and machinery use.
Enforces safe working conditions with all job assignments and is responsible for instructing staff on proper equipment use and work methods.
Maintains crew integrity and reports to work with a positive and professional attitude.
2-4 Year Turf Degree or Turf Certificate Program Education preferred
Have the ability to obtain a Montana pesticide license within 6 months
Full Time Position: $25-$27 DOE/hour with overtime and some weekends in season

Opened in late 1922 with six holes and soon expanded to nine holes, Hilands Golf Club was incorporated in April 1923. Hilands Golf Club remains on its original site picked out by golf legend Walter Hagen, making it the oldest private golf club in Yellowstone County and one of the oldest in the state.
