About Whispering Pines Golf Club
About Whispering Pines Golf Club
Whispering Pines Golf Club rests on 450 acres of beautiful pine and hardwood forest that sits along the shores of Lake Livingston, The property was acquired by Barbara and Corby Robertson in 1970 for neighboring Camp Olympia, a renowned summer camp. Mr. Robertson staked out the golf course routing in 1992. Timber was cleared, seed was sown, and soon afterward, "Olf” (golf without the greens) was being played by Camp Olympia’s Junior Golf Program. By the mid-nineties, Camp Olympia Golf Course, as it was known then, was partially complete and featured the first Flora Dwarf greens in Texas. In 1998, Mr. Robertson’s vision broadened to create world-class golf to support the Texas Medical Center, health related causes, and the promotion of amateur golf. The new vision founded the Spirit Golf Association (SGA), a 501- c – 3 charity organization that manages all membership and tournament activities at Whispering Pines. The SGA Membership program consists of Individuals, National, Corporations, Spirit Tournament Sponsors, and Charitable Partners who make an annual contribution to support SGA charitable beneficiaries. Operating on a two-season basis from Ma...rch to July and September to December, Whispering Pines offers members and their guests an intimate, world class golf experience.
Chet Williams of the Nicklaus Design Group was hired to design the best course in Texas. Twenty months later, in March 2000, Whispering Pines Golf Club opened its doors, and as golfers found their way, rave reviews ensued. Whispering Pines debuted as the 3rd Best New Private Course in the nation by Golf Digest. Since 2006 Whispering Pines has held the #1 course in Texas ranking by the Dallas Morning News. Whispering Pines has also been recognized as the #11 overall Greatest Golf Retreat in America and boasts #55 in Golf Digest’s Top 100 Golf Courses in the U.S. With a course rating of 77 at 7,460 yards from The Spirit tees, the course has provided a challenge through numerous Big 12 Championships and Texas State Amateur Tournaments. Whispering Pines is also the biennial host of The Spirit International Golf Championship, a world amateur event in which the top 2 male and female amateurs from 20 different countries compete and showcase their talents. The Spirit alumni have gone on to win over 650 professional titles, 25 major championships and 17 Olympic appearances. They include 16 PGA Tour winners, 25 European Tour winners, 23 LPGA Tour winners and 21 Ladies European Tour winners.
In 2020 The Championship Course underwent a full renovation orchestrated through Chet Williams, with groundwork performed by Sanders Golf Construction. This project entailed installation of a state-of-the-art RainBird IC irrigation system that consists of PVC mainline and HDPE laterals. Along with extensive drainage the course converted wall to wall with Zeon Zoysia and sprigged Tif-Eagle greens. The bunkers were stripped and now feature Bunker Solutions liner and Premier Play sand.
In 2012 a World Class par 3 course, The Needler, came into fruition. Featuring wall to wall Zeon Zoysia and Mini Verde greens, The Needler was designed to be played from various tee boxes that allow golfers to hit every club in their bag. Like The Championship Course, The Needler consists of a RainBird IC system that utilizes RainBird’s new Cirrus Pro software. In the winter of 2022, The Needler will undergo a bunker renovation addressing drainage and will conclude with the same liner and sand specs as the Championship Course. A potential greens renovation is also in the works of The Needlers master plan.
