Memorial Park Golf Course is looking for an Assistant Superintendent with a proven record of sound agronomic practices, excellent leadership skills, and a winning attitude. As host of the PGA Tour’s Texas Children’s Houston Open, this position is an opportunity to gain invaluable experience that comes with hosting professional golf tournaments. The ideal candidate will be looking to branch out from the daily course setup and maintenance routine with a focus on details that are imperative for a successful PGA Tour event.

Course Description

Memorial Park Golf Course, home of the PGA Tour’s Texas Children’s Houston Open, was originally built in 1936. In 2019, the course went under full renovation designed by Tom Doak. The revamped course currently boasts a new Toro 2-wire irrigation system, sand capped tees and fairways, double-decker driving range, and brand new club house and maintenance facilities. Mini-verde bermudagrass greens and 419 bermudagrass make up the turf that cover the beautiful 250 acre property. Strategic bunker placement and well-designed undulations around the greens create a challenge for even the best golfers in the world.

We are excited about the upcoming Texas Children’s Houston Open that will be held the week of March 25-31, 2024. This is a prime spot in the PGA Tour schedule what will attract a much stronger field than seen in previous Houston Open’s at Memorial Park GC. With this spring date we will be overseeding greens, tees, fairways, and roughs to provide optimum playing conditions. This position is ideal for an individual that is looking to be heavily involved with hosting a PGA Tour event.

Position Highlights:

• Work directly with Senior Superintendent to develop and execute agronomic plan
• Direct involvement with all aspects surrounding a PGA Tour event
  • Managing a complete buildout of grandstands
  • Supervision of multiple contractors
  • Organization of staff and volunteers to host a successful tournament
• Experience gained in overseeding greens, tees, fairways, and roughs
• Focus on leadership and team building

 
 The potential candidate will play a role in the following duties:

• Direct and assist managing all aspects of golf course maintenance at Memorial Park Golf Course, ensuring that the golf course is maintained to PGA Tour standards, following modern agronomical practices and regulatory guidelines while hosting an annual PGA Tour event.
• Manage staff performing golf course maintenance.
• Assist with establishing goals and objectives for the golf course.
• Works with contractors and represents the golf course in the absence of the golf course superintendent.
• Assist in preparing and monitoring maintenance and staff schedules, including culture practices.
• Ensure proper maintenance of specialized course equipment, irrigation system, and course amenities.
• Compile and maintain local, state, and federally mandated records, such as fuel, water, and chemical storage/use.
• Assist in planning, scheduling and overseeing course repair, construction, and special projects.
• Assist the Senior Superintendent with budget preparation and initiate/monitor purchases for course equipment and supplies.
• Assist with training and evaluating the performance of personnel. Work with contractors and department managers on joint projects and conflict resolutions. Investigate and resolve complaints; evaluate efficiency and productivity of operations and services; develop plans to resolve problems and manage the completion of projects. Represent departments at meetings, external organizations and agencies.

Minimum Education
Requires a minimum of:

• Associate’s degree in agronomy or turf related field and 6 years of experience

Experience Requirements

• 6 years total experience required, with 3 years in a supervisory position
• Knowledge of basic agronomic skills pertaining to warm season turfgrass
