Our current Senior Assistant Superintendent has moved on to take the newest superintendents spot in the Henke Development Portfolio and, with another golf course slated for construction in the next 2-3 years, this is a great way to involved in our culture of success and promotion from within.
Job Summary
The Assistant Superintendent will partner with the Superintendent to ensure our members and guests have the best possible playing experience. The assistant superintendent will work in conjunction with superintendent on all golf course maintenance related items including irrigation, fertility, chemical application, daily/weekly scheduling, associate management, and development.
Daily Operations
Train and Implement Procedures for Golf Course Maintenance Staff Perform Chemical and Fertilizer applications. Daily water management of Greens, Tees, and Fairways Daily evaluation of turf for wear, disease, moisture, cut quality, growth rate, etc. Assign and develop work-efficient schedules to meet staffing needs of Golf Operations and as warranted, recruit and hire staff to provide superior level of member services. Determine appropriate personnel action (counseling, written warnings, suspension, or termination) in the event of performance, attendance problems or violations of company policies coordinate with Senior Management and Human Resources as necessary. Effective communication with staff, members, and other management.
Experience Requirements
2-3 years’ experience in Golf Course Maintenance Ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicators License within 90 days of employment Advanced knowledge of regulatory requirements and recordkeeping as required by local, state, and federal laws Diplomatic team player able to foster relationships with members, employee partners, and guests
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversees schedule of daily maintenance practices for property utilizing the equipment, materials, and staff, adjusts if needed or reassigns after initial ones are completed. Checks on staff member assignments to ensure productivity and proper completion of task. Assists in the hiring, training, supervision, evaluation, and discipline of staff. Ensures record keeping of daily maintenance practices. Manages the execution of fertilizer and pesticide programs. Ensure proper calibration of equipment used in applying fertilizers and pesticides. Obtains and holds appropriate pesticide license for golf course applicators. Reviews records of material applied to property to ensure accuracy. Oversees maintenance and repair of irrigation related equipment for proper function and performance. Communicates with Equipment Manager regarding equipment needing adjustment or service. Assists in supervision of staff operating equipment in a safe manner. Communicates with golf shop on maintenance activities on course and how they affect play. Makes recommendations for irrigation adjustments to ensure playability and health of turf and grounds. Supervises and participates in on-course construction activities performed in-house ensuring goal of project is achieved. Assists in the supervision of outside contractors performing work on property. Assists in developing annual budgets, making recommendations for adjustments of future resources available to maintain property to expected standard of playability and presentation. Supervises winter weather practices for course and grounds. Continues education through seminars and written periodicals. Orders materials for department permitted by superintendent. Performs documentation of monthly invoices to be submitted to accounting. Provides assistance to other departments when needed, such as pool cover and member events. In absence of Golf Course Superintendent responsible for all aspects of Golf Maintenance. Performs other duties requested by Golf Course Superintendent.
Qualifications (knowledge, skills and abilities):
Leadership experience at a golf course with a proven record of having exceptional course conditions. Knowledge in preparing and managing golf course budgets. Knowledge of pest control products and their applications. Knowledge of turf chemical and fertilizer products and their applications. Knowledge of irrigation utilization, drainage installation, repair and maintenance. Experience with course renovations and project oversight. Understanding of the game of golf and the impact agronomic decisions have on course playability. Have a current Indiana pesticide applicator license, or the ability to acquire a license. Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint. Have a BS, Associates Degree, or certificate in turf grass management.

Additional Salary Information: This is a salaried position; Managers work on a weekend rotational schedule, which means you will only be required to work 1 weekend a month ( 3 weekends off) during the peak golfing season (April-November). During December-March no weekends are required.
