Equipment and Shop Manager

The Apawamis Club located in Rye, New York is seeking a driven and passionate individual to join their team as the Equipment and Shop Manager. As the Equipment and Shop Manager you will play a crucial roll in ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of our extensive inventory of equipment valued at over $2.5 million dollars.

The golf course took shape in 1899, which was stewarded through design by the then Chairman of the Golf Committee, Maturin Ballou, who astutely enlisted the assistance of a young Scottish professional named Willie Dunn, Jr. Mr. Dunn had traveled to the U.S. to build what is the now fabled links at Shinnecock. Changes have been made to the Apawamis golf course since its original design throughout the years by famed architects Herbert Strong (1906-1911), Donald Ross (1930), George and Tom Fazio (1977), Gil Hanse (2001-2002), Tom Marzolf (2014) and Keith Foster (2017-2022). 

Position Overview:

The Equipment Manager at The Apawamis Club will be responsible for daily upkeep, preventative maintenance, and repair of all Grounds Maintenance equipment. This includes but not limited to:

• Jacobsen PGM Green Mowers
• John Deere 220SL Approach and Tee Mowers
• John Deere 9009 and 7400 Rough Mowers
• Honda Push Rotary Mowers
• John Deere Gator and Pro-Gator Utility Vehicles 
• Cushman Vicon Spreaders
• CAT Skidsteer and Mini-Excavator
• Chem-Turf Sprayers
• Miscellaneous RedMax, and Stihl Small Equipment 
• New Foley 653 Accu-Master and Foley 673 Bedknife grinders

Works with 11 full-time, 14 seasonal employees as part of a collaborative, high morale team environment.

Initial Focus Areas:

• Collaborate with open lines of communication with Golf Course Superintendent, management team and staff members.
• Ensure sure all cutting units are up to standard, followed by implementing a preventative maintenance schedule as the candidate becomes more acclimated to the operation.
• Develop a well organized work area with a high standards of safety, training and housekeeping practices.
• The ideal candidate would assist in the selection process of new greens mowers to be used starting in 2024 or 2025 and the selection of any new mowing equipment for any subsequent years.

Key responsibilities, skills, aptitude, and knowledge:

Equipment Maintenance

• Performing daily preventative maintenance and repairs on all equipment.
• Placing orders for parts and supplies needed for maintenance.
• Maintaining an organized and clean shop area.
• Operating equipment in a safe manner.
• Lift at least 50 pounds.
• Being involved in the daily planning, scheduling, and decision-making process.
• Works with the staff to ensure proper training of equipment, care and safety stands.

Budget Management

• Managing equipment inventory worth over 2.5 million dollars.
• Ordering parts and supplies within budget constraints.
• Develops key relationships with local suppliers. 
• Maintains exceptional records of all equipment, preventative maintenance schedules and other items.

• Taking a proactive approach to equipment maintenance for optimum performance and longevity.
• Being a core member of the management team.
• Self-motivating and continuously enhancing abilities

Compensation and Benefits: 

• $105,000-$115,000 DOE

Preferred Requirements:

• High School Diploma 
• 3-5 years of experience in the maintenance and repair of golf course equipment and small engines 
• Familiarity with grinding reels and bedknives
• Developing a preventative maintenance plan
• Troubleshooting equipment breakdowns
