Wanted: Golf Course Superintendent to assist us at a beautiful mountain golf course located in Western North Carolina situated between Boone and Asheville in the vacation paradise of Avery County North Carolina. We are just off the Blue Ridge Parkway with lots of 4-season outdoor activities and mountain charm. Mountain Glen is open for play from April-October, closing for the winter season.

We are seeking a qualified applicant to take charge of this beautiful and challenging 60 year old George W Cobb designed 18 hole golf course. The successful applicant will enjoy this cool season course with winters largely free, from Late December through Mid February. Our greens are a Poa/Pencross blend on native soil. Fairways are a mix of native cool-season grasses with mostly bent tee and approach areas.

This course is equally special to the locals who call Mountain Glen home and the legions of fans who come in search of shelter from the summer heat. We offer a beautiful course in a beautiful area where a seasoned Superintendent or a grounded Assistant looking to hone his or her skills will find challenges and rewards for a job well done. 

 

 
Requirements

The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the successful operation of the Golf Course Maintenance Department, Golf and Clubhouse Grounds and other duties as directed by the Board of Directors. The Superintendent works closely with the club President and Green Committee on capital improvement projects, as well as close support of the Head Golf Professional to maximize the number of rounds of golf and promote the guest experience. Oversee a staff of 9-12 with a complement of H2B workers (Spanish speaking skills are a plus). 

Day to Day

  • Train and Implement Procedures for Golf Course Maintenance staff
  • Perform chemical and fertilizer applications developing successful programs to ensure disease and insect populations stay within acceptable levels.
  • Focus on overall green health in order to sustain top-level and relatively fast greens throughout short but intense golfing season
  • Provide appropriate feedback to staff, and recommendations to Green Committee & BOD regarding compensation, maintenance programing, staff and department needs, etc.
  • Create and implement irrigation plan including hand-watering and comprehend basic course irrigation needs within system limitations and use of Toro Lynx system
  • Assign and develop work-efficient schedules to meet needs of Golf Operations and as needed, recruit and hire staff ensuring appropriate level of maintenance and member/guest accommodation.
  • Develop relationships with members and guests to promote golf activities.
  • Effective communication with staff, members, and Senior Management. 
  • Develop and implement overall agronomic plan to maximize turf health and beauty within constraints of golfing season, tournaments/events and membership/guest needs.

What we'd like to see...
  • Golf Course Maintenance management.
  • Associates Degree in Turf Management or appropriate education/experience 
  • Pesticide Applicators License or ability to obtain one in a reasonable timeframe.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and recordkeeping as required by local, state, and federal laws.
  • Diplomatic team player able to foster relationships with Members, Employee Partners, and guests.
  • Budgetary and business acumen sufficient to keep operations within parameters set forth by BOD
  • Ability/desire to invest personally, your time and love into our golf course.
  • Willingness to play golf and a love for the game is a plus.
  • Certification or Class A is preferred but not required
