The Assistant Superintendent:

  • Assists in the planning and supervising of construction / maintenance of the golf course and other property within the borders of Wild Laurel Golf Course.
  • Schedules work and supervises employees to insure the completion of their assigned tasks. He may modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation, weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.
  • When on duty, the Assistant initiates contact each morning with the golf shop to coordinate maintenance and golf shop concerns.
  • Trains and instructs employees on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; trains and documents employee progress in accordance with the Wild Laurel training program.
  • Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment. Applies a variety of pesticides to turf areas; reads and understands pesticide labels; knows and uses safe pesticide application methods and the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Supervises and/or applies fertilizers and soil amendments. Calibrates and maintains spreaders and fertilizer application equipment.
  • Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of the irrigation system. Is familiar with the use, operation and repair of irrigation system components, including pumps, control panels, timers, sprinkler heads and valves.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budgets for the maintenance and capital improvements of course properties.
  • Assists in interviewing, training, directing, and supervising a staff of employees for the purpose of maintaining course properties. The Assistant has the authority to initiate disciplinary action in the absence of the Superintendent.
  • Responsible for inventory of pesticides and fertilizers and supplying this information to the Superintendent. Also keeps Hazard Communications information and MSDS up to date.
  • Assists in personnel management, evaluation and conducts employee safety meetings.
  • Keeps an accurate and complete record of maintenance procedures and pesticide applications. Provides this information upon request to the Superintendent.

Minimum education requirement:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Prefer the successful completion of a two-year turfgrass program.

 

Must have the following:

  • Ability to obtain, within 30 days of being hired, a Tennessee Pesticide Applicators License category 03.
  • A valid driver’s license
  • A combination of college and job experience to total at least four years.
  • Requires working knowledge of the cultural practices that apply to the maintenance of golf course tees, roughs, fairways, greens; the seeding and establishment practices for golf course turf; the planting, cultivating, pruning and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; the safe use of pesticides and pest control materials; proper bunker maintenance; basic knowledge of drainage and irrigation system operation and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with golf course construction methods.
  • Requires ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient use of workers and equipment; to prepare clear and concise reports; and to maintain effective employee and public relations.
  • Ability to recognize turf stress, watering needs and common disease problems.
  • Familiar with basic preventative maintenance of equipment and able to make minor repairs.

Wild Laurel is an 18 hole course, one mile from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Townsend, Tennessee. Being in a major tourist area, much of our play comes from visitors to the area. We are an Audubon Certified Sanctuary and the course not only has some of the best scenery anywhere, but a wide array of wildlife as well. The course is a tight, challenging layout, with bermuda wall-to-wall and bentgrass greens.
