Golf Course Superintendent

Responsible for operation of the golf course maintenance at a 18 hole facility. The responsibilities include: turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, budget/forecasting, financial management, scheduling/maintenance or irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. The Golf Course Superintendent works to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and respect for themselves, guests and the property.

Key responsibilities of the Superintendent:

• Perform a variety of supervisory and skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of golf course buildings and grounds.
• Using excellent customer service skills establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.
• Supervise the Assistant Superintendent, maintenance workers, mechanics, and part-time or temporary employees, as required.
• Manages and supervises assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources.
• Plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments.
• Trains, motivates, and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed.
• Coordinate with Pro Shop staff to coordinate tournaments, special requests and banquets.
• Communicate official plans, policies, and procedures to staff in assigned area of responsibility.
• Assures that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget; performs cost control activities; monitors revenues and expenditures in assigned area to assure sound fiscal control; prepares annual budget requests; assures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities, and time.
• Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites work flow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
• Issues written and oral instructions; assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.
• Maintains harmony among workers and resolves grievances;
• Performs or assists subordinates in performing duties; adjusts errors and complaints.
• Lays out daily work schedules and assigns tasks to appropriate individuals, crews or combination of crews, and coordinates the completion of the same.
• Develops and maintains a golf course maintenance management system. Develop golf course maintenance and operating procedures and methods within limits of departmental policies and procedures.
• Provide necessary supervision, direction, and assistance to crews at work sites. Enforce policies, regulations, and safety and health standards.
• Determines, calculates, and secures the appropriate materials and supplies for a specific project.
• Inspect golf course maintenance and improvement services provided by contractors or vendors for compliance with performance standards.
• Improves work methods to accomplish assigned work.
• Assist in projecting needs for equipment, materials, and supplies. Assist in the preparation of specifications, estimates, and bids for machinery, equipment, and contractor services.
• Assure that tools and equipment are properly maintained and kept in proper working condition.
• Assigns, supervises, and evaluates Assistant Superintendent, maintenance workers, mechanics, and part-time or temporary employees.
• Prepares and maintains daily, monthly, and annual reports and records, as assigned.
• Provide information within scope of knowledge and position.
• Oversee and assist in the mowing and maintenance of golf course fairways, rough, greens, tee area, and other open space areas; oversees and assists in the maintenance of sprinkler systems and the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
• Oversee the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of the golf course.
• Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.
• Required to keep fuel logs and ensure fuel pump is locked up and secure at all time
• Oversees the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and wetlands on the facility grounds. 
• Directs and assists the staff on the planting of new vegetation, the replacement, spraying, pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs, the preparation of soil plant beds for aesthetically pleasing arrangements and tending to high stress areas.
• Provides detailed annual plan for the various property levels and the designated landscaping areas. Includes rotational design to provide facility with fresh, eye-catching, interesting and pleasant atmosphere. 
• Manages an aggressive water usage tracking plan and irrigation systems and provides monthly reporting on retaining ponds, wells and other water source usage.
• Recruits, supervises and retains maintenance staff. Conducts employee performance evaluations and exercises disciplinary action. 
• Provides technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is working within OSHA, club safety, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
• Oversees subordinates in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment. Plans and budgets for additional or replacement capital equipment.
  Supervises and participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the
• Club's grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
• Supervises and controls all maintenance expenses associated with Golf Course Operations, including payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers.
• Develops annual operating budget and plans for maintenance and capital improvement projects.
• Maintains records and completes required reporting. Order parts, supplies and equipment as needed.
• Schedules maintenance practices around member play and outings to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to guests.
• Coordinates snow removal and winter maintenance.

 Knowledge & Skills Required:

• Knowledge of management and maintenance of sand based bent grass greens & fairways.
• Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in golf course construction and maintenance work.
• Skill in recruiting, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel.
• Interpersonal skill to resolve conflict and work with supervisors, officials, employees, members and the general public.
• Knowledge of safe use, mixing and application of chemicals and commercial products.
• Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules and methods of play.
• Ability to anticipate personnel, equipment, and material requirements related to golf course maintenance and repair assignments.
• Ability and knowledge to lay out irrigation patterns, drainage patterns, construct tees and/or greens.
