The Supervisor of Grounds and Athletic Fields shall be responsible for the complete care and maintenance of the campus grounds. Must be on an on-call basis 24/7 for weather emergencies and high visibility events such as Commencement and Convocation.
Grounds Management
- Responsible for the management of all Campus grounds maintenance activities. Responsibilities include planning, organizing and directing the day-to-day work programs to provide high levels of excellence on the main Campus and out-lying properties. Responsibilities also include coordination of grounds maintenance work activity with other Campus Services and Physical Facilities sections, and with various University Departments.
- Organize and direct all snow removal including shoveling by hand, snow removal equipment and snowplowing.
Staff Management and Quality Control
- Maintain quality control checks and train staff.
- Oversee the time-keeping system for the Facilities department.
- Use creative and independent thought on a daily basis to respond to last minute changes in plans for major events or to change work assignments of the grounds staff, including making decisions during off-hours on a 24/7, on-call basis.
- Manage outside services, grounds management supplies and equipment budget.
Nature and Scope
- Organize all work schedules for grounds, flower beds, watering and fertilizing annual and seasonal plants to ensure proper maintenance and care.
- Organize daily work schedules of grounds maintenance personnel to support the grounds maintenance schedule. Keep informed of the whereabouts of employees and status of work assignments.
- Provide safety and operational training for staff, oversight and management of grounds subcontracting.
- Prepare and review employee job performance with employee and the Director of Facilities. Make recommendations for improvements.
- Perform similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Job Requirements:
- Associates degree in operations management, business, golf course management and agronomy or a similar field of study.
- Minimum of least ten years of grounds experience including supervision and a working knowledge of all aspects of grounds management.
- Must have a working knowledge of PC-based software and computer-based work order systems as well as a technical competency with grounds equipment, fertilizing of grasses, plants and flowers.
- Must be licensed in Rhode Island for pesticide application.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in operations management.
- Experience in a college or university with supervision of staff.
- Significant, direct, proactive interaction with all university constituents, and particularly grounds maintenance staff, is strongly preferred.
At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
