This is a technical and supervisory work in the maintenance of Golf Course ground, buildings and equipment. An employee in this class, supervises and participates in the planting, conditioning, maintaining and repairing of greens, fairways and surrounding golf course areas, including the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment. Works independently under the general administrative direction of the manager who periodically inspects work. Develops, participates in and supervises daily turf maintenance programs such as aerating, top dressing, mowing, fertilizing, watering and turf repair. Makes daily observations of turf grass conditions on greens, tees and fairways to detect problems such as disease, insect infestation, weed problems, etc. Determines and administers a proper program for disease and insect control. Assigns, supervises and inspects maintenance staff engaged in the landscaping, mowing, application and recording of chemical treatments, and general care of golf course. Designs, participates in and supervises golf course renovation and beautification programs such as planting new grass, trees, ornamental plants, shrubbery and flowers. Supervises and participates in the overhaul and maintenance of machinery, mowers, irrigation systems and other equipment. Trains employees in planting of trees throughout the grounds area as needed. Coordinates and supervises the general maintenance and repair of golf course buildings. Researches, makes recommendations and purchases all supplies necessary to maintain the course. Keeps records and prepares daily reports of employees time and work completed. Conducts periodic performance appraisals for each subordinate employee. Takes daily attendance and approves vacation scheduling for subordinate employees. Attends conferences and studies current developments in the field of grass care and turf disease. Performs related work as required.

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED with two years of college level course work in horticulture or other specialized training in grass management and a minimum of three years of responsible experience in the maintenance of golf course greens and fairways or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of an Georgia Department of Agriculture Commercial Applicator License. Thorough knowledge of the equipment, practices and methods of golf course maintenance. Thorough knowledge of turf diseases and chemicals for control. Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions in working with turf disease control chemicals. Thorough knowledge of the types and care of various golf course grasses and thorough knowledge of the operations of irrigation and drainage systems. Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of subordinate personnel. Ability to train employees in all aspects of the work., including the safe and efficient operation of all equipment. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective employee and public relations. Ability to mix chemicals for feeding grasses and for combating turf diseases. |
