The City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department Golf Operations Division is currently looking to hire an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent with at least one (1)-year of full time, professional-level, experience as a Golf Course Greenskeeper and two (2) years of experience as a full-time paid Grounds Maintenance Worker. The qualified candidate will have experience maintaining, mowing, edging, fertilizing, calibrating, golf course setup and applying pesticides and herbicides to golf course greens, aprons, tees and fairways, as well as the experience in the operation of small equipment necessary for golf maintenance such as aerifiers, loaders, sweepers, core harvesters, mowers, hand tools, chainsaws, weedeaters and sod cutters. The highly desirable candidate would demonstrate skills that would include knowledge and experience in assisting the Golf Course Superintendent in preparing a golf course to host a PGA Tour event and/or a USGA event. - Planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; schedules work; and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment.
- Assists in staff management and evaluation, employee safety and employee counseling.
- Training, motivating and supervising staff capable of performing the tasks associated with maintaining the golf course.
- Modifying the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation as needed.
- Conducting daily staff morning meetings, monthly staff meetings and communicating the daily and weekly objectives of the golf course maintenance department.
- Discussing daily schedules, programs and concerns with the team with attention to efficient management and quality control in mind.
- Proper application of fertilizer and plant protectants
- Inspecting the golf course to determine any pesticide, herbicide, or fertilizer needs and communicates with supervisors to implement these needs.
- Irrigation operation, troubleshooting and repair
- Ensuring proper use, cleanliness, and security of maintenance facilities and equipment.
- Overseeing the completion and assisting in the completion of tasks and projects in a timely manner
- Implementing proper hand watering practices on putting greens, surrounds, and other playing surfaces.
- Keeping the team focused on cohesion, working together, being proactive in helping each other and sharing information.
The Assistance Golf Course Superintendent assists the Golf Course Superintendent in the following area: TURF MANAGEMENT/MAINTENANCE - Assists in monitoring agronomic programs as they relate to golf course conditions and playability.
- Assists in planning and coordinating renovation projects including but not limited to greens, trees and bunkers.
- Assists in assesses the water needs of golf courses via visual inspections and analysis of data collected on water consumption/usage.
- Assists in conducting on-site investigations and inspections of turf areas to determine the effectiveness of the current irrigation system giving consideration of factors such as; types of vegetation/foliage and its water needs, chemistry and absorption rate of the soil, efficiency of current system (i.e., correct sprinkler heads, positioning, possible leaks, and takes into account seasonal conditions as factors (i.e., amounts of sun and rain).
- Assists as needed in collecting soil samples for analysis at an independent govern soil laboratories.
- Assists as needed in modifying current water irrigation schedules/systems based on inspections and recommendations changes to improve water conservation via more effective utilization of water from Golf Course Superintendent.
- Assists in investigating and researching new water conservation technology, methods and products.
- Assists in implementing and monitoring the effectiveness of conservation monitoring devices such as computerized operation of irrigation central and field satellites.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - Qualifying grounds maintenance experience MUST include:
- Cultivating, fertilizing and planting lawns, shrubs, trees, flowers and ground covers; pruning trees and shrubs; renovating lawns; and the operation, maintenance and minor repair of irrigation systems or motorized grounds maintenance equipment.
- Education Replacement for Experience:
- Associate degree or higher, or Community College certificate in Agronomy, Horticulture, Golf and Sports Turf Management or a closely related field, may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of one year of the required grounds maintenance experience.
- A vocational or trade school certificate in Agronomy, Horticulture, Golf and Sports Turf Management or a closely related field, may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of six months of the required grounds maintenance experience.
- Applicants who do not have a certificate or an Associate's Degree as specified above may substitute completed course work that is directly related as follows: One semester unit = 69 hours of experience/one quarter unit = 46 hours of experience (one year of full-time experience = 2080 hours).
CERTIFICATE: A valid Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) in Landscape Maintenance issued from the State of California Department of Pesticide Regulation will be required within nine months from date of hire. |
