The Tournament Course at the Golf Club of Houston served as the proud host of the PGA Tour’s Houston Open from 2006 through 2019. Designed by Rees Jones and David Toms, it combines many unique architectural features and offered challenges that tested the best players in the world when we hosted the Houston Open. Today, members and the general public alike are able to play the course and it remains highly ranked in the state of Texas for public golf courses.
Reporting to the Director of Agronomy, this position assists with the operation of the golf course operation and maintenance activities including: turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, budget/forecasting, financial management, member relations, scheduling/maintenance of irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. The Superintendent works to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and respect for themselves, members, guests and the property.
Responsible for all phases of Golf Maintenance and Agronomic operations, cost control, and personnel.
Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the Director of Agronomy on any issues related to golf course maintenance.
Directs and participates in the construction and maintenance of the grounds.
Administers and enforces member / guest rules, regulations and policies for staff.
Works closely with the Director of Agronomy to operate the facility maintenance in a fiscally responsible and professional manner.
Assists with hiring and training staff to include helping to maintain training and performance documentation
Ensures irrigation systems are operational, ensures repairs are made as well as irrigation duties are being performed to keep the courses up to standard
Oversees and performs general maintenance including but not limited to: mowing, raking, blowing, mulching, sod work, aerification and set up
Supervises 20 or more employees assigning duties
Reviews direct reports
Monitors labor expenses to budget
Ensures employees are trained in safe work procedures and work is performed in a safe manner by providing technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is working within OSHA, club safety, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
Assists with special projects and performs other duties as assigned
Ability to follow written instructions
Ability to operate general maintenance equipment
Valid driver’s license
Ability to hand dig in various climatic conditions (hot/cold temperatures)
Ability to lift, push, pull a minimum of 50 pounds
Ability to stand for long periods of time, withstand constant movement of extremities, bend at waist and perform repetitive hand, wrist and foot action, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight and extreme temperatures and outside weather conditions (heat/cold, rain/snow) for up to eight hour shift
Must have excellent communication skills
Associate degree or Certificate in Turfgrass Management OR 3 years of golf course experience, required
Experience applying fertilizers and chemicals with boom type sprayers
Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy (Turf) or 3 years of golf course experience, preferred
Irrigation experience, Toro Site Pro preferred
Supervisor experience preferred
