Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Francis A. Byrne Golf Course is one of three courses owned and operated by the Essex County Parks and Recreation Department. Francis A. Byrne Golf Course was built in 1927, originally known as Essex County Country Club West, with routing by legendary architect Seth Reynor and engineering by the esteemed Charles Banks. We have recently completed a $5 million renovation to our golf course Hendricks Field in Belleville and are in the early stages of planning a large scale renovation at Francis Byrne for the second half of 2022 to bring back the Reynor/Banks features that have been lost over the last 90 years. These renovations will take Byrne from being one of the better public golf courses in North Jersey to one of the Best. 

The assistant superintendent will be involved in all aspects of Golf Course Maintenance. Duties will include Pesticide and Fertilizer applications, Irrigation system operation and hand watering, Course Set Up, Crew Management, Small Project Oversight and operation of all turf maintenance equipment. Assistant will also be required to lend a hand at our other 2 courses when necessary and will assume all responsibilities of the Superintendent in his absence. We do not have a large crew so the employee will be expected to perform any task assigned, big or small. 

I believe in a balance of personal time and work life. We do not work 70 hours a week during the season. A normal week is 40 - 44 hours Monday - Friday and 4 hours Saturday and/or Sunday. The benefits are great and after 10 years you will be vested in the NJ Pension program.
