About the Director of Residential Landscape
REPORTS TO: General Manager and works directly with the ALC (Architectural and Landscape Committee)
Licenses: Possession of a valid California driver’s license and a good driving record, possess or ability to obtain a pesticide QAL or QAC, ISA Certification a plus, working toward degree a plus.
This position requires instruction and guidance of subordinates as needed for safety and correctly operating equipment in the course of their job descriptions.

Job Summary: The Director of Residential Landscape is responsible for direct daily supervision of employees in the homeowner’s association (HOA) Union Local No. 1184 Landscape Maintenance department, which maintains the grounds in the common areas of Marrakesh Community Association (this excludes the golf course and individual private courtyards). The daily operations and management of the common area landscaping is the primary focus. This position includes supervising and instructing subordinates in the use, maintenance, and repair of equipment. Instruction and ongoing oversight in terms of aesthetic expectation, safe operation, and care of the equipment is mandatory. Reports directly to the General Manager and works directly with the ALC (Architectural & Landscape Committee).
Directs daily maintenance of common area landscape.
Supervises the planting, fertilization, and maintenance of the common area within the HOA.
Supervises operation of equipment repair shop, orders supplies and materials with budgetary limitations.
Maintains records of annual maintenance activities.
Leads department in forecasting repair and replacement budgets.
Inspects all machinery for wear; determines, based on past experience, the operating efficiency of machinery by observing indications on gauges and meters; directs subordinates in regulating operation of irrigation control equipment or machinery.
Makes estimates of cost of labor and materials for repair and installation of equipment and requisitions all purchases of supplies as needed or sanctioned by the General Manager.
Confers with local authorities, inspectors, and contractors; directs changes necessary to comply with regulations governing operation and use chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, etc.
Familiarity with Rain Bird Freedom irrigation controls and water management potentials of the equipment.
Experienced with Hydorozone irrigation and possess the ability to modify the existing systems and or plantings to achieve water management goals more effectively.
Hires, trains, motivates, evaluates, and supervises union landscape maintenance employees.
Purchases tools, parts, equipment, and materials as is necessary to complete jobs.
May hire sub-contractors as is prudent and necessary, assuring all insurance requirements are met.
Hires and Discharges union and casual labor employees per union guidelines with approval of the General Manager.
Conduct staff safety meetings as prescribed by General Manager.
Maintains a professional, positive style of communication with members.
Continually inspecting common area landscape.
Essential Duties and Knowledge: Requires the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals relating to equipment to operate all equipment successfully. Must be a self-disciplined individual who demonstrates complex problem solving and decision-making skills to address daily demands of water and landscape maintenance. Ability to make reports, equipment maintenance schedules, and perform a variety of maintenance activities ranging from manual to skilled to maintain all aspects of the common area landscape. Should have thorough knowledge of the City of Palm Desert “Desert Flora” landscape maintenance guide and be able to communicate those procedures and guidelines, particularly with respect to pruning of trees and shrubs to subordinates.
JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Intermediate computer knowledge.
Experience in pump station maintenance and repair.
Soil physical characteristics.
Electrical trouble shooting and electrical connections.
Knowledge of AC and DC power currents.
Communicate clearly, both verbally and written in English and Spanish.
Work outdoors in extremes of heat, cold, and wet.
Work effectively in the absence of direct supervision.
Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Trouble shoots and solves difficult often complex problems
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities as necessary. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience: Three to five years of landscape maintenance experience, working toward a degree in Horticulture or Plant Science.
Abilities, Physical, and Mental Characteristics.
Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; manual dexterity, vision sufficient to read written schedules, hearing sufficient to follow directions; physical mobility sufficient to move about an uneven terrain, physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and reach overhead; physical strength to lift from the floor up to 50lbs unassisted and up to 80lbs with assistant; physical stamina sufficient to sit or walk for prolonged periods of time and exposure to pollen and cut grass. Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, defines problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make in the field valid judgments and decisions.
