Chartered in 1929, Northwood Country Club is one of the South’s oldest and most prestigious clubs. Located inside the city limits of Meridian, Mississippi, Northwood Country Club is nestled among rolling hills, mature pines, hardwoods and lovely Southern landscaping. The original clubhouse was a reproduction of George Washington’s Mount Vernon home that was built on land donated by the Repsher family. The present clubhouse, which was inspired by a club in Boulder, Colorado, had its construction begun in 1970 and was completed in 1971. This structure is a large, contemporary, multi-level facility constructed of stone, wood, and glass. In addition to its beautiful and convenient location, it provides members with all the amenities of a private club: 18-hole championship golf course, full service golf shop, driving range, six lighted tennis courts, tennis clubhouse, main dining room, grill dining room, Olympic size swimming pool with poolside grill, fitness room and men’s and ladies’ locker rooms. Members enjoy monthly social activities, special dining activities, golf tournaments, golf clinics, tennis tournaments, tennis clinics, swimming pool activities, and other activities for adults and children.
Northwood Country Club enjoys a proud golfing tradition spanning over ninety years during which time over 50 individual and team high school state championships have been won. Notable amateur golfers to come through the junior golf program include Andy Ogletree (2019 US Amateur Champion), Eddie Merrins (Hall of Fame Golf Instructor, Player, and Coach), Virginia Derby-Grimes (Curtis Cup Captain and Player, Hall of Fame Player), Lou Hart (Hall of Fame Player and Coach), Clay Long (Golf Club Designer for Jack Nicklaus, MacGregor, Arnold Palmer, Cobra, and TaylorMade), and multiple State Amateur Champions including Mike Taylor, Gene Vinson, HG Weddington, Pam Posey, Chuck Rea, and Johnny Lang.
Northwood’s course was renovated in 2010 with the help of architect Brian Ault. The greens were converted to Champion Bermuda grass. The fairways, tees, and rough are hybrid Bermuda grass. Fifty-one sand traps, tight fairways, and numerous trees make for a challenging, but enjoyable, round of golf.
