We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic turfgrass students eager to have an educational and fun internship. This internship will help you prepare for a career in turfgrass management. 3-to-6-month internship positions are available. Interns will report to Assistant Superintendents, Golf Course Superintendent, and the Director of Agronomy.
Whisper Rock Golf Club is located in Scottsdale, AZ. The club features two golf courses, the Lower (Phil Mickelson, Gary Stevenson 2001) and the Upper (Tom Fazio 2005). Both golf courses are ranked in Golf Digest’s America’s Top 200 and the club is ranked #43 in Platinum Clubs of the World 2020-21. The club is home to many active and retired PGA and Champions Tour players.
Both courses feature Bentgrass greens, and Bermudagrass tees, fairways, and rough. The courses go through its overseed process to Perennial Ryegrass in October.
This 3-to-6-month internship is ideal for someone who would like to experience transition from Ryegrass to Bermudagrass in the early summer, with an opportunity to experience the annual overseed process in October.
Educational Requirements
Must be currently enrolled in a 2- or 4-year Turfgrass Program.
Job Training and Responsibilities
Including but not limited to:
· Course setup, mowing, and cultural practices. Including Fraze mowing, aerification, verticutting, topdressing, etc.
· Irrigation: Repair and maintenance of irrigation system, drainage, irrigation auditing and hand watering of greens and fairways.
· Fertilizer and Chemical applications, calibrating, and record keeping. Includes Spray Hawking greens and tees, and spraying of fairways and rough.
· Special projects including building/modifying tees, installing specialty irrigation, and bunker enhancements.
· Equipment Maintenance: training in adjusting mowers, changing mow heights, reel and bedknife grinding.
Job Benefits
· Housing Stipend: $700/month offered in assisting in living expenses.
